About Chromic Gut Suture

1 Suture's Chromic Gut suture is a sterile, absorbable surgical suture made from purified bovine connective tissue (mostly collagen). A chromic salt coating delays absorption and minimizes tissue irritation. It meets all U.S.P. standards for absorbable surgical sutures and is used for soft tissue approximation, ligation, and ophthalmic procedures.

Upon implantation, the suture triggers a moderate foreign body response, followed by enzymatic digestion and absorption. Absorption varies based on factors like infection and tissue site:

  1. Fully absorbed in 60–90 days.

  2. Faster absorption in infected tissue.

  3. Accelerated breakdown in enzyme-rich areas (e.g., stomach, cervix, vagina).

1 Suture's Chromic Gut is brown, high-collagen, and treated to resist enzymatic degradation, prolonging absorption beyond 90 days. Higher collagen content ensures superior tensile strength, extended absorption time, and reduced tissue reaction.
